The Expendables 3 Now In 4K UHD

ex3leak

I think everyone will accept that The Expendables 3 was a disappointment at best.  Even the ‘R’ cut did not do anything to deal with the terminal problems in the movie, because worse than a lack of violence was the likes of Mel Gibson and Wesley Snipes being supplanted with god awful pissant nobodies.

That said, for those who might be interested, the movie has a new release.  We’re talking about 4k Ultra HD here, which the movie has now been on sale for a week or so on Blu-Ray.

There’s a review of the picture quality on Blu-Ray.com, rating the quality as 2.5/5.  Unfortunately to the best of my knowledge this was the only movie filmed with Red Eye cameras, so getting the 1st movie in 4K is going to be a little more difficult.

That said, Sicario and Mad Max: Fury Road are beginning to really tempt me into adopting, but it would be that rumoured release of Predator (if it’s good unlike those poor 1080p transfers) that could really force us to upgrade.

I’d say Mel has given his agent special instructions with regards to phonecalls from Nu Image from here on out.

Has anyone here actually seen benchmark 4k yet? And is it worth upgrading? I checked out a panel at a store a year or two back but it was underwhelming to say the least, but those pothead morons in those places probably had it connected and calibrated wrong.

“Unfortunately to the best of my knowledge this was the only movie filmed with Red Eye cameras, so getting the 1st movie in 4K is going to be a little more difficult.”

It’s got nothing to do with digital cameras, Jordie, because film stock is a higher resolution than 4K anyway; film is unlimited resolution.

What it comes down to is the digital intermediate. All three Expendables movies were finished and exported at 2K, so the EX3 Blu-ray is an upscale. If the previous two movies ever get released on Ultra HD Blu-ray, they too will be upscales. But even then, upscales are nothing to sneeze at since you get a better-resolved image with stronger colours, deeper blacks, and superior grain refinement.
