2) Cold In July
Several times while watching this, especially towards the end and during the finale, I thought about rating this movie a 10/10. But I think that such a rating should only be reserved for outright classics. Too many sites and magazines throw around 5/5 and 10/10 ratings willy nilly, especially those with commercial sponsorships. But man, Cold In July, it’s such a good movie and an even manlier movie. It’s a raw, unsentimental and violent thriller with a peculiarly realist streak of black humor running up its back. It’s part Out Of The Furnace, part No Country For Old Men. It’s even set in the early ’90s.
The finale of this movie in particular is a classic. Take it from me, it’s ultra-manly. And as the movie begins, it’s the last thing you’d think is going to happen. It’s a violent shootout where brutality is indifferently and matter-of-factly meted out, redneck style, to pissants who are begging for it. This is where manly actors Sam Shepherd and Don Johnson get in on the act, their performances during the violence where blood hits the ceiling are so subtle, like they were simply laying wallpaper.
See this movie, buy it, don’t miss it.

I guess it was a long shot for Edge of Tomorrow to make the list. Didn’t pay much attention to the other movies held in high regard here this year outside of John Wick and Fury.
If you had reviewed Edge of Tomorrow, what would you have given it?

Edge of Tomorrow was cool.
i thought it was awesome.
at least it was cool to see something different.
I have always been a Cruise fan..he got a lot of bad press for what i thought was really not that important shit.
he always tries hard..which u cant say for every A lister in Hollywood

Pajiba once did a post on how Tom Cruise is actually a pretty boring person and how a star’s personality has an effect on his/her movie’s box office. Cruise was on the Nerdist with Chris Hardwick and Pajiba mentioned how the Nerdist is able to get their star guests to divulge more personal details, but Cruise seemed to continue to promote himself as a Hollywood star.
I don’t really care about his personal life. When it comes to his movies, as a performer, he’s got balls of steel. So that earns a great deal of respect.

I always felt he got waayyy too much shit for jumping on Oprah’s couch.
I know we men play it cool..but let’s be honest..we get some pussy , we do a victory jump..hahaha.
Anyways, he makes mostly good movies. U see him hanging from planes like he is doing for M.I. #5 or hanging from a Skyscraper in #4.
He puts in the work. I dont think Tom Cruise is the type of guy who would do a DTV movie for a few dollars for a few hours. He clearly still gives a fuck about his career.
i am a fan of his.
one more thing..i don’t know squad about scientology, & yes what i’ve heard is cooky…but..like i’ve always said..why is it okay to trash some religions or politics , but for others they run u out of town.
just sayin

Major props to Cruise for his practical and ballsy stunt work in a lot of his movies, even though they could easily have CGI’ed a lot of it.

*Agreed. I would never do half the shit he does. Man enough to admit that. I’ll be all like:” hang a dummy from the plane!” My movie would look like Super Dave!
*i actually liked Jack Reacher a lot.
think is a bit underrated .
Brian Bosworth would have been great ( cause he looks like he is described in the books) but u know that never was going to happen.
But Cruise was good. He is reliable.
i think the movie was entertaining with the great Duvall of course

Can’t wait to see how that plane scene in MI5 plays out onscreen. Does anyone know if they shot that in IMAX like they did Ghost Protocol and that Burj Khalifa scene?

The action frustrated me and the dramatic elements bored me and overstayed their welcome. The first movie shits all over it.

I understand the drama complaint, but you must be smoking some fierce shit if you were frustrated by the action. I don’t even know what that means, but it sounds ridiculous.
The first movie was FULL of the drama you can’t stand, so I don’t get the hate.

I don’t really understand choice of John Wick. The story of the movie is plain dumb. Keanu Reeves is acting the same like in all his movies: same talk, same gestures, same look all the time. The movie is very unrealistic. I did not see much of a blood or gore either. It looks like it was toned down a lot. The movie is without heart. Some people make comparison to Taken. I just rewatched Taken and it is sooo much better.

Actually the manliest movie of 2014 was Equalizer. Beautiful direction, excellent play by Denzel, brutal movie
