If you’re like many people, you’ve probably only heard of the ‘3DO’ in passing. It was a games console that came about in the 1990’s through a partnership between EA, Panasonic and others. Most people only stuck to Playstation, Nintendo and SEGA during that era, so the 3DO was one of those Frankenstein sideshows that no-one really adopted.
Not only was it expensive, but it also had few games and most of those were nameless ventures. It did have one ‘big gun’ though, an exclusive version of the video game Demolition Man.
This game is interesting because it was developed alongside the actual movie and it had Sylvester Stallone return to appear in cut scenes, as well as clips from the actual movie. The game is broken down across several genres, from beat ’em up, to light gun to first person shooter.
Jesse Ventura makes a cameo as a 2D cut-out, who you must kill, I’m sure Ventura is still collecting royalties for that.
What stands out to me though are the graphics. For a 32-bit system and for someone whose idea of 32-bit games is firmly rooted in the PS1 I grew up with, the visuals in this game are impressive to say the least, especially for a 1995 game. I’m not talking about the ‘digitized’ movie stuff either. The first person shooter segment looks quite good.
Sure enough after a bit of Googling, it turns out that the 3DO was more powerful than its contemporaries.
