Top Five: Mel Gibson Movies

2) Mad Max 2 (1981)

Speaking of masterful pacing, here’s the best chase movie of all time. Some say Bullitt has the best driving/chase sequence. Close, but not quite. Mad Max 2 has the best chase sequence/s. It was directed by probably the third best action director of all time. The end chase is unrivalled, even Cameron tried to re-do the truck chase twice (each Terminator movie has something similar) but never came to equal it. Is this film the first real action movie ever? It came out in 1981 and I can’t really think of anything like it prior. It’s so lean and pure, like a raw shot of nitrous. And of course there’s Mel. The fucking epitome of badass in this movie, under-acting, cool and reserved.

I love everything about this film. The sound (those fucking engines!), Mel, Miller’s no-nonsense directing. It was shot on a budget and yet it shits all over anything even remotely like it with ten times the budget. Super-hack Paul Anderson tried and failed miserably with those God-awful movies Death Race and Resident Evil Extinction to rip off this. You can smell the gas and rubber, literally, watching this. And it has Vernon fucking Wells!
