2) The Day After (1983)
Now we’re moving firmly into ‘aw shit, this better not happen’ territory. This is the film that infamously sent the wind up manly man Ronald Reagan, after someone showed it to him shortly after it was broadcast.
It’s a more exposed nuclear war movie and I’m sure more have seen it. Unlike the previous three, this one has a political build up, exchange of bombs, then consequences. It’s depressing but gripping all the same. Keep in mind, this movie was broadcast mere weeks after the Able Archer Fiasco, where a glitch in Soviet early warning systems almost killed everyone.
The movie really finds its stride with the aftermath, when hair starts falling out and there’s talk of shitting your guts out. I’d like to see a remake of this, big budget style. But I seriously doubt they’d have the balls.
