Upcoming Manly Movies: August 2015

The Runner: August 7th

We are deep into summer now and in the final day of July, so let’s take a look at what beckons for August 2015 as far as manly movies go.  Nicolas Cage puts his serious face back on (probably) for a limited release in The Runner.   “In the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill, an idealistic but flawed politician (Nicolas Cage) is forced to confront his dysfunctional life after his career is destroyed in a sex scandal.”  It remains to be seen if this will be a blip on Cages perpetually near-flatlining career.  But I sure would like to see him dig something out of the trash and impress us with something with substance again.

Cop Car: August 7th

Kevin Bacon is set to go the baddie route once again with the upcoming thriller Cop Car.  Two good-natured but rebellious young boys have claimed their independence and, unbeknownst to their families, ran away from home. Equipped with some beef jerky, they stroll through golden fields making their way towards a secluded glade where they find an abandoned cop car. Curious and excited, they explore the car, find the keys and take the car for a joyride. Their bad decision unleashes the ire of the car’s owner, a county sheriff, who has left something of great value in the car and is desperate to get it back. A fast-paced game of cat-and-mouse ensues and the boys quickly discover that the fun is over and they are in way over their heads.  This will be a limited release, so keep an eye out.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E: August 14th

August will also be a month where we will see if Guy Ritchie can re-assert himself as an artist and competent film maker with this adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  We love us some Cold War thrilling.  At the height of the Cold War, a mysterious criminal organization plans to use nuclear weapons and technology to upset the fragile balance of power between the United States and Soviet Union. CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) are forced to put aside their hostilities and work together to stop the evildoers in their tracks. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a missing German scientist, whom they must find soon to prevent a global catastrophe.

Hitman: Agent 47 – August 21st

Towards the end of the month we will see the latest adaptation of the Hitman series with Agent 47, starring Rupert Friend in the title role.  The synopsis goes like this.  “A genetically engineered assassin (Rupert Friend) targets a mega-corporation that wants to use the secret of his origin to create a whole army of killers.”  This movie was written by Skip Woods (hmm…) and directed by Aleksander Bach.  This movie is Rated R for sequences of strong violence, and some language.
