A while back Steven Spielberg predicted that Hollywood, in its current incarnation of non stop vacuous blockbusters, was going to come crashing down. A lot of people thought that Spielberg was talking about comic book movies.
In a new interview with The Associated Press for his upcoming Cold War-era thriller Bridge of Spies, he admits he hasn’t changed his mind:
“I still feel that way. We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western. It doesn’t mean there won’t be another occasion where the Western comes back and the superhero movie someday returns.
Right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving… I’m only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture. There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us.”
So you have to wonder what genre will eventually succeed Marvel and DC’s reign of agony. My first suggestion… anything. I think maybe something could emanate from Asia, who knows.
