For those who missed Stallone’s Variety interview in full yesterday, he also talked about the possibilities for a follow up to Creed. Apparently he wants to bring back Carl Weathers for a prequel. Sort of like Robert De Niro’s role in The Godfather 2.
One version of the story would take place in the past, which would mean bringing back Carl Weathers to play Apollo Creed, who died in 1985’s Rocky IV. “Ryan has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together,” Stallone revealed. “Think of The Godfather 2. That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious.” Stallone said he’d recently bumped into Weathers, who looked like he was still in good shape. “I can’t believe I got in the ring with him,” he says. “Even if it was play fighting.”
It’s hard to think how Weathers could be added to the Rocky franchise again in any capacity. A big part of Creed revolved around his death and, well, he’s too old to play a young Apollo. I suppose one option is narration. Ten years ago Stallone referred to Weathers as ‘Apollo Greed’ when he refused to allow his likeness for use in Rocky VI.
