The Keep (1983) Getting New Doc

Those holding their breath for The Keep (1983) on Blu-Ray or DVD are long since dead.  Others have the slightly rare Laser Disc or VHS versions.  Rarer still is an upscaled 720p version of the movie that has been broadcast on some satellite services.

But take my word for it, it isn’t the same upscale as you’d find for the likes of, say, True Lies, which isn’t on Blu-Ray either.  The audio problems also remain.

That said, this polarizing movie is due to get a studious documentary.  Although Paramount and Michael Mann are not fond of the movie, you should check out TheKeepDocumentary.co.uk to find some people who really are.

A World War II Fairytale: the Making of Michael Mann’s ‘The Keep’ aims to explore the films successes and failures, and its avoidance of easy categorisation – showing a deep appreciation of film and film-making. An uncharacteristic choice in Mann’s career trajectory, The Keep continues to cause debate and admiration in equal measure.

This had a Kickstarter, but when I first looked at it it fell short at the end date.  I’ve seen this happen before, I’m not sure I understand how Kickstarters work. Perhaps that will motivate Paramount for muster a Blu-Ray blow out with the 3.5 hour original version of the movie, but the advice stays the same, don’t hold you breath…
