The supposed feud between The Rock and Vin Diesel has been well-documented, to the extent that we’ve come to expect it might all be a publicity stunt. Hey, The Fate of the Furious just pulled in the biggest worldwide opening ever, so all the marketing must have worked.
Anyway, according to the folks over at The Wrap, Diesel’s pettiness knows no bounds. Allegedly, a post-credits scene for the new $250 million blockbuster (how do they waste that much money?) was cut at the last minute at the behest of Diesel, because said sequence involved Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw, setting up a potential spinoff that seriously needs to happen.
Producer Neal Moritz had the tag filmed without Diesel’s knowledge, the insiders said. When executive producer Samantha Vincent, Diesel’s sister, learned of the scene and told Diesel, he became enraged, according to the insiders.
They said Diesel then called the film’s studio, NBC Universal, to explosively air his grievances. The studio had all the theatrical prints recalled and cut the scene, the insiders said.
Another insider put it more diplomatically, saying that the sequence was initially shot as bonus content for home entertainment release. When studio executives and filmmakers reviewed the sequence that included Johnson and Statham, they “loved it,” but ultimately decided not to include it in the theatrical release because “the sequence would make for a better opportunity somewhere else,” the insider said.
Yeah, I’m going to assume that the Option A is the one that happened, because why would the studio executives and filmmakers pass up including a tease for a potential spinoff, especially if the tease is so good that people might wanna pay for another ticket to see it again? Diesel is clearly jealous of The Rock, and is probably jealous of Statham too because they’re both far more charismatic.
Thoughts?
