After the shit-fest that was Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, when it was revealed Arnold Schwarzenegger did not give a fuck, hopes were raised with the announcement of Terminator: Salvation. Primarily because Christian Bale had signed on, which indicated that maybe Village People jokes would be a thing of the past.
Of course, we got a soft PG-13 movie that did not live up to the standards of the Cameron-verse. Now director McG has been talking about a darker cut of the movie:
It’s interesting because I feel like we did so much right with Terminator but, ultimately, got just enough wrong that we got beat up a little bit by the fanbase and it really, really broke my heart. And now, strangely, I think the film has started to age better.
There is a different cut. I have my own cut of that film and there’s people online that talk about wanting to see that cut. And that’s interesting! But I think I got a lot of things right with that.
Obviously, I think [uncredited screenwriter] Jonah Nolan is very, very serious writer and he did the best he could. [Maybe] the cut that I have of that movie hidden away is the answer. It’s darker! [Laughs] I don’t know, that’s for the fans to say.”
It sounds like McG is glad that the subsequent movies have been truly execrable and have made even his look good in comparison. There is a harder (R) director’s cut, which is three minutes longer. So McG must be referring to another version. I can actually tolerate McG’s film better than the third, and especially the… ‘other’ entries. It’s least worst. But I don’t think any amount of additional material can truly fix it, the whole Sam Worthington character is immovable.
