Paramount has sold multiple ‘big’ films off to streaming services in recent times, in light of the ongoing virus and lockdown situations. One movie they’re holding onto however is Top Gun: Maverick.
A new report in The Wall Street Journal claims that Paramount Pictures was approached by both Netflix and Apple about the possibility of buying the distribution rights for the film, and the studio turned them down.
Paramount will not sell the movie. They are adamant that it goes to cinemas.
At some point, the establishment will encourage people to return to their normal routines and something big will be needed to draw them back into cinemas. Paramount is hoping that it is Top Gun 2. Given how good the trailers have been, it looks like this is a good bet for them.
The only question is when to release it. A buffer window might be wise between life returning to normal and its release. With it’s current summer release date, it’s possible that the problem may have ended by then and people will be eager to get back out there. With good word of mouth, this could be 2021’s biggest film.
Which would be the second year running that it wasn’t CGI leotard figures flying through the sky.
