TOP GUN SHOOTS DOWN AVENGERS: BIG MONEY

Top Gun: Maverick has taken in $679 million across North America, enough to overtake Marvel’s  green-screen spandex movie Avengers: Infinity War ($678 million) and move into sixth place in domestic box office history.

Next it could beat leotard movie Black Panther and pass $700 million.

This ‘legacy sequel’ sure is shaking the comic book hegemony tree.

Also remember that the latest gross figures for Maverick do not take into account receipts from big overseas markets China and Russia.  That’s a lot of money, the bean counters will not have let this slip their attention either.

There’s money to be made with dusting off old manly movies for big respectable sequels.  Let’s hope Bruckheimer and pals can make something out of this fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie, though obviously ‘Maverick’ benefited from Tom Cruise’s Midas Touch.

The question is… which franchise could they rejuvenate next?
