More talk of Gladiator 2 is circulating this week.
While on the Fitzy and Wippa podcast, Russell Crowe gave a broad synopsis for the movie. He says that the character of Lucius will be central to what will broadly be a sequel, further down the line.
If you remember, there was a young kid who wanted to beat the Gladiator, which leads to the “My name is” speech. So that young kid has grown up, and he’s now the Emperor. It’s not a remake. And it’s not a direct sequel. It’s not like the day after, you know, 30 years later or something. And then the situation arises you know
This sounds somewhat removed from an old rumor that Ridley Scott was going to helm some nutty supernatural-themed sequel. Crowe has said that he’s spoken to Scott about involvement, I don’t know how that’d work.
Paul Mescal is said to be playing Lucius and the lead in the movie. We need a good sword-and-sandals movie. The early 2000s were great, following Gladiator, with Troy, King Arthur et al doing okay and giving the genre a mini-revival.
