Ripley Turns Down Expendables Crossover

Sigourney Weaver has turned down a request to appear in a female-orientated Expendables movie, working title ‘The ExpendaBelles‘, according to this source.  They didn’t give any further information on why, but I think it’s pretty easy to put 2 and 2 together.

This movie was indeed supposed to be a crossover, despite what anyone else might say.  The plan was to include Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis in the cast as Barney Ross and Mr. Church respectively, in order to give the film buoyancy.  The fallout with Willis changed things, with Harrison Ford set to reprise his role as Drummer, offering the female team a job at taking down a dictator in Brunei.  Had The Expendables 3 been a success, the plan was to fast-track The ExpendaBelles and film it entirely in Bulgaria as early as September.

Well two big blows there, obviously.  Sigourney snubbing this movie is like Schwarzenegger snubbing the main franchise.  I can’t blame her considering how Schwarzenegger was treated in the main movies.  And secondly, the main franchise is obviously now in peril.  I respect Sigourney Weaver for turning this down.  She is (if not Linda Hamilton) the queen of action.  One thing I liked about Weaver was how she retained her femininity, much like Nancy Allen in RoboCop, while still kicking ass.

Not like these butch try-hards today, like Gina Carano or Michelle Rodriguez…
