It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything from Michael Mann, his last movie was in 2008, Public Enemies. That was a good movie, but a poor Michael Mann movie. Well just a heads up, because his next gig seems to have (somewhat) flew under the radar.
His next movie is Cyber and it’ll be released January 16, 2015. After a case of high-level computer hacking arises, American and Chinese military forces work together to stop it. The film’s lead, Chris Hemsworth, described it as a “sort of cat-and-mouse international heist-thriller.”
The film was shot in Los Angeles, California, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Jakarta, Indonesia. Mann donated HK$300,000 (US$38,500) to the Community Chest of Hong Kong in the name of Hang Seng Bank, to thank the bank for allowing him to film Cyber for 5 evenings in the bank’s lobby area. Now can you imagine how cool that particular setting is going to look under the direction of this genius?
Look, Michael Mann is the real deal. He is the man Christopher Nolan wants to be and the man Nolan fanboys believe Nolan to be. I am glad they gave this gig to Mann, it sounds like something Nolan would’ve got his hands on and ruined… with overwrought exposition and dull pseudo intellectualism.
Cyber then… one to keep an eye on.
