The popular Fast & Furious series has what appears to be a rival coming in 2014, in the form of a movie adaption of video game franchise ‘Need For Speed’. Our main criticism of the last Fast & Furious movie (review) was its borderline cringe worthy shark jumping. Although the audience who spent hundreds of millions on it went to see the ensemble and didn’t care about the vehicular action, real car fans weren’t impressed by such nonsense. It’s a good thing then that new director James Wan has hinted that things will become grittier and more realistic in the next movie, citing movies like the French Connection as his inspiration.
Good. We want cars that behave like real cars.
And since they didn’t in the last (few) ‘Fast’ movies, Need For Speed director Scott Waugh has taken the opportunity to score some points against his behemoth rival, by boasting that his movie will feature cars that behave realistically:
“I’m all about practicality because I believe that, if you break the rules of physics in stunt work, you break the rules of character jeopardy. If a car can jump off a moving train that’s 40 feet high and land and keep going, then a person can take a bullet and keep going, too. [In reality] if a car crashes, it ain’t going anywhere.”
Now while he doesn’t outright mention the Fast series by name there, he clearly is referring to it. The train he’s referring to is from the opening of Fast Five, presumably the bullet is from a wound Diesel incurred in Fast 6, without any effect. Like Superman. So while it’s good to hear that both directors are both trying to woo us with something adult car aficionados can appreciate, there is one problem. For Waugh at least. Thing is, the latest trailer for Need For Speed has hit… and it looks like a Justin Lin Fast movie – without the ensemble cast. When was the last time you drove a Mustang off a cliff face, only to be caught by a helicopter? So… color ManlyMovie unconvinced. Check out the new trailer below…
