There’s been some confusion over what Mad Max: Fury Road actually is. Is it a sequel or reboot? A big part of this confusion is down to Miller refusing to clarify things and the presence of that car – black on black Pursuit Special. Obviously, the ‘last of the V8’s’ was destroyed during The Road Warrior, hinting that it’s re-emergence in Fury Road must mean that the movie is a reboot. But hold on there… no so fast. As mentioned in this article the V8 in this movie was built in 2003 for Mel Gibson, for Fury Road (same movie), and that movie was still within the original timeline. We just weren’t sure how he acquired it…
Now though, there is a possible fix to the puzzle, courtesy of Total Film Magazine’s December release. They have a small FAQ on Fury Road and they state that it is set between the events of Mad Max and Max Max 2. Unfortunately they don’t tell us anything else, but this does make sense. It explains the presence of the car and the events that take place between those movies would be ripe for narrative exploration – a third World War among other things, in theory. However, still gonna categorize this as ‘rumor’. It’s not the first time I’ve heard this and while Total Film Magazine is one of Europe’s most solid sources… the same article also informs us that Mel Gibson will cameo.
And sadly, that’s a litmus test failure. We know he won’t cameo, as confirm by Miller in the past week and debunked by this site all year. So is it true? Maybe, maybe not…
