A reboot of a reboot is on the way. Scarface is getting the old rejig treatment again. The original 1932 movie was set in Chicago. The reboot movie was set in 1983 Miami. The new movie will be set in 2016 Los Angeles.
Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain (“No”) is in negotiations to direct the latest version at Universal Pictures and Global Produce. A Mexican immigrant named Tony rises in the criminal underworld as he strives for the American Dream. This version is said to have more of a “mythic origin story” tone which explores “where Tony’s physical and emotional wounds come from and how they shaped him as a man”.
Paul Attanasio (“Donnie Brasco”) penned the current draft of the screenplay. Marc Shmuger and Marty Bregman are producing. The producers aim to cast an “authentic Latino who is bilingual and bicultural.” I dunno but Donnie Brasco wasn’t too bad, as far as writing goes but the rest sounds meh.
