It emerged recently that John McTiernan would get to work right away on a new movie after his release from prison. The movie, called Red Squad, would feature a rogue DEA agent taking down criminal elements on the US/Mexico border. Along with a small teaser poster, not much else was revealed.
Today we have a full plot outline to share with some technical details. Notice that the director is listed as ‘TDB’, but we are told by a production official that McTiernan is indeed that man ‘in negotiations’. As of now, this is all the info we can squeeze out but we’re promised more when it comes down the pipe.
After his stakeout on the U.S. border results in bloodshed on both sides, TRENT MITCHELL, head of the DEA, convinces his deputy administrator, HAL, to help him put together a covert team to hopefully make a dent in the war on drugs. Trent sets out to find MARTIN CRANE , a mercenary currently working in the African jungle. Meanwhile, in the small Mexican town of Los Rojos, another police chief has been killed by the Giraldo Cartel. The oldest cop on the small force, EDUARDO LEON feels pressure to man up and take the job as police chief. But Leon knows that doing so will mark him for murder at the hands of ABEL GIRALDO, the vicious leader of the cartel.
Trent finds Crane in Morocco and offers him $1 million to assist him in the war on drugs. Crane agrees and selects his team: MARCELES DONOVAN, CLAUDE RINEAU, FRANCHESCA COSTA, and ISAAC HUNTER. After a few days of training exercises, the team heads south of the border to await the latest drug delivery. Once the trucks arrive, the cleverly disguised squad attacks from all sides. A firefight ensues and after some close calls, the squad leaves victorious and heads back across the border to Texas.
Leon, fed up with the cartels, finally decides to take initiative. The new police chief is dead, so Leon appoints himself to the position and follows the team across the border. He offers to join their cause and provides them with intel on the whereabouts of Giraldo’s warehouses and drug factories.
The subsequent attack on the factory is an explosive success, except for one key loss: Hal is captured and tortured for information, which sets up a failed attack on Giraldo’s mansion. The squad find themselves in the middle of an ambush, and must flee for their very lives. Crane disappears and the team scatters.
Trent is arrested, and Leon faces his most desperate hour. Leon manages to cross the border and visits Trent in jail. They agree that they need to find Crane, or face the possibility that Giraldo will soon head to Texas and set up shop, leaving a crippled Los Rojos behind. Leon finds Crane, but can he convince him to venture back to Mexico without his team at full capacity?
Movies simply don’t get more exciting than “Red Squad.” Non-stop action, terrific humor, fun characters, and a timely subject matter combine for an entertaining adventure in which good triumphs over evil and an unlikely hero emerges and inspires.
