McTiernan Speaks – Yes, He’d Direct The Expendables!

Here’s some big news, John McTiernan has given his first interview since being released from a federal gulag. Empire Magazine, the biggest film magazine in Europe, purposely flew to John McTiernan’s private residence last month to interview him.  They don’t do that for just anyone.  He revealed a lot, see below.

But there’s even bigger news.  Empire asked him if he’d be willing to direct another Die Hard movie and/or an Expendables movie.  His answer?  Yes!  “Though in theory he’d be up for doing another Die Hard movie, or an Expendables movie, he hasn’t got time for another dud:  DEA versus drug lords actioner Red Quad, which is being reported as his comeback movie, has stalled because he views the current draft as offensive”. On that last note, things have moved on with Red Squad, McTiernan is still directing.

Elsewhere in the incredible interview, McTiernan opened up about his time in prison and previous projects. Some, but not all of his info is listed below – you should really check out the full printed issue for all of it.

  • During his time in jail, McTiernan gathered with 20 Spanish inmates to cook a feast.  John says this was important because cooking is a ‘masculine act’.  A guard however viewed the gathering as ‘gang activity’ and broke it up.  McTiernan spoke up, signalling how ridiculous the guard was being.  The guard charged at ‘Mac Daddy’, red faced with rage, issuing threats.  It was his only instance of ‘trouble’ in prison.
  • McTiernan says on the set of Predator, Sonny Landham was out of control at night, in one instance repelling down a hotel wall completely naked, terrorising vacationers
  • McTiernan says while in prison, he wrote the screenplay for a sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair, and that the original was his favourite movie to shoot.
  • His nickname in prison among the six other inmates in his cell was ‘MAC DADDY’.
  • McTiernan is writing a book about his time in prison.
