The director of Con Air (and The Expendables 2), Simon West, has recently spoken about the possibility of making a sequel to Con Air.
“There are always rumours about a Con Air 2,” West told ScreenDaily. “I would do it if it was completely turned on its head. Con Air in space, for example – a studio version where they’re all robots or the convicts are reanimated as super-convicts, or where the good guys are bad guys and the bad guys are good guys. Something shocking. If it was clever writing it could work.”
In fact — for a little history lesson here — Con Air 2 was originally supposed to film around 2000/2001. The original plan had convicts take over an airport, with John Cusack returning to deal with the situation. The idea was canned after 9/11 for obvious reasons. Nicolas Cage was not supposed to return for that, although in recent times he has been open to a sequel in general (I’ll bet).
