Sylvester Stallone Sure Has Changed His Tune On Core Fans

Thanks to Anoyster and another fan of action movies, Lt. Hiram Coffey, we can today recall some quotes that were made by Sylvester Stallone while promoting previous Expendables movies.  With The Expendables 3, it seems that they’re really going for a younger, fresher pallette.  For example the promotional aesthetics, the font etc, really look heavily inspired by the Fast & Furious series.  This is odd, considering what Sylvester Stallone said of the original movie, when trying to sell it to fans, when he was still very much unsure of its success and felt the need to pander to them:

“You really have to be loyal to the people that supported you when you were coming up. When you try to reach out and dress a certain way, like “Yeah, I’m hip”, it’s pathetic.”

Oh yes, Sly.  We agree.  See the trailer with Stallone and dinosaur Kelsey Grammer trying to get with it at a nightclub where Rhonda Rousey is beating up several men: “I could do that”.  Then, on the rating itself, Stallone said of the original movie that they could only go one way, as far as that was concerned:

As for the rating, Stallone promises a hard R. After all, just look at the cast, he says. “These guys are born a hard R!”

Well they may have been born hard R and given life by the “people who supported them when they were coming up”, but it seems that that “one last ride” certainly won’t be a hard R, but PG-13, now that Stallone is no longer “coming up” and no longer needs core fans.  Stallone, you see, has gone from owing fans who supported him coming up, to “owing it to a younger generation”.  But wait, that kinda doesn’t fit with what he said around the time of promoting the first movie:

“Every generation, including mine, has to find their own heroes – I didn’t identify with John Wayne. Way too early. I was with James Dean. You have to find your own heroes, and this generation has defined superheroes as their heroes. ”

What gives, Sly??
