The Expendables 3 is released this weekend. Although in some countries it has already been released (in cinemas) ahead of street date. Anyway, the film will face tough competition. Here are the box office results from this past weekend.
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles $65,000,000
2. Guardians of the Galaxy $41,530,000
3. Into the Storm $18,020,000
4. The Hundred-Foot Journey $11,120,000
5. Lucy $9,330,000
6. Step Up All In $6,580,000
7. Hercules $5,700,000
8. Get On Up $5,012,000
9. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes $4,400,000
10. Planes: Fire & Rescue$2,419,000
The obvious obstacle there is TMNT. That’s quite a strong opening and even if it drops by 50%, like Guardians Of The Galaxy did for its second weekend, it’ll still probably beat The Expendables 3. The Turtles is PG-13 and its main audience is the bracket that The Expendables 3 is now aiming for. The Turtles also, believe it or not, will appeal to older people. TMNT is certainly a big deal to me (won’t be seeing that hideous Bay edition). Their boom years ran parallel to Stallone and Schwarzenegger’s. Those who were kids then, have kids now.
Another R-rated actioner opens this weekend too. Let’s Be Cops. I wanted to write that movie off as more Wayans shit, but looking at the trailer I simply can’t. It looks funny. The second week for The Expendables 3 will also have competition in the R-rated Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. It’s third week, more competition in the ‘Hard R’ November Man.
Then of course there’s the piracy thing…
