I think that many of us have probably forgotten just how many SAW movies there even are. For a long time it was literally one movie per year or very close to it. That kind of thing can have a negative effect on a franchise. The original director was James Wan and he had long since departed.
Would there be a chance of him returning though? Producer Oren Koules:
“When ‘Saw’ came out [James Wan and Leigh Whannel] were so afraid of being ‘the ‘Saw’ guys’. They were trying to make their own mark. Now that they’ve made their own mark, they’re very comfortable to come back. We’re getting there. James and Leigh are absolutely going to put their mark on it. It’s one of the reasons we agreed to do this again. We kind of wanted to build it up.”
The hope is for the new film to hit in 2016, with that year’s San Diego Comic Con serving as the big blowout for the return:
“Our goal is to go to Comic-Con, not next summer but the summer after with our heads up saying, ‘Here we go.’ James and Leigh are comfortable with the success they’ve had. And it’s time. James is in post on his movie. Leigh’s on post on [Insidious Chapter 3]. Everyone has time and it’s time.”
Incidentally the original movie returns to cinemas this month (Halloween night) for a one week run, probably a test run to see if people are still interested?
