3) Fury (2014)
It was too long since we got a straight up ‘tank’ movie, and this year the call was answered with Fury. Better yet it was directed by Mr. Gritty Realism himself, David Ayer. Ayer is a former submariner so he knew how to portray the life of a cramped serviceman inside a steel coffin leaking oil and smelling like shit. Fury also breaks new ground by having an honest to goodness real Tiger appear in the movie to do battle, a cinematic first – not some other boring tank with parts welded onto to it to make it look like the real deal. Fury is one for the tank nerd for sure, even if it has an ageing Brad Pitt as a commander despite such men usually being twice as young. It’s probably the best war movie since When Trumpets Fade and the fact that both shun feel good treats for the audience and show war as ‘war’, probably isn’t a coincidence. They should’ve used the Pershing instead of the Sherman though… just sayin’.
