Top Five: Battle Tank Movies

2) Kelly’s Heroes (1970)

You gotta check this one out, but just sure you’re stocked up on some wine and some cheese, man.  This was once the king of battle tank movies until another one from the 80’s stole its crown with ease.  If you ask me, the final battle with one Sherman taking on three (mock up T-34 ) Tigers protecting a bank, is a cinematic and manly movie masterpiece.  Yes it’s a funny movie, but when it came time get down to business, this one really delivered.  Clint Eastwood directing a tank battle, it doesn’t get much manlier than that.  And it was done realistically too, the only way a Sherman is going to confront three Tigers was to do exactly what they did in the movie.  Thirty years later David O. Russell went on to do a quasi remake of this movie (Three Kings, the one where George Clooney knocked him out on set), but while a good manly movie, it wasn’t in the same league.

Great sounds too, from the soundtrack to the mix deliberately letting the rip of the beasts’ engines come through.  This film has so many positive waves, as a viewer you can’t lose.
