James Wan Discusses Original Furious 7 Ending

fast7trailer

The seventh Fast & Furious movie originally had a typical ending that would lead into the next movie, as you’d expect.  But as you also know, one of the series’ two biggest stars, Paul Walker, passed away early during production.  This meant that the ending had to be scrapped, re-written.

Director James Wan has this week revealed what the original ending was like.

The original ending of Furious 7 was setting up, you know, the bigger world of where the Fast and Furious franchise could go into. And that’s obviously very smart of them to think so. But when the tragedy happened, all of that became irrelevant. So it did not matter anymore, all of that stuff. And to the studio’s credit, they did not push for that. They realized how important it was to make a movie that finishes and that just outright is a tribute to Paul Walker. So I give them a lot of credit for being bigger than that and going along with this ending that is the right ending to go with.

So it sounds like there might possibly have been a cliffhanger, or something much more open ended.  Another thing that I think could have been changed was the emphasis on Sung Kang’s death, which was sort of similar to Walker’s real demise.  It was referenced in the movie, but you know, you couldn’t “go there” too much with that one.

I personally think the movie wasn’t okay, but I wonder if it suffered because of the troubles.  Who knows…
