It appears that after a streak of flops and misfires since his return from his failed bid to take over the United States, Arnold Schwarzenegger put a lot of stock into Terminator: Genisys being the one that got him back on track. The heavy artillery was called up with the Terminator namesake but it was unfortunately armed with PG-13, Jai Courtney and Game of Thrones shells. Poor choice of ammo, it failed. A last minute attempt to get old buddy Jim Cameron into the breech and tell a fib did not work.
Terminator: Genisys was mauled by critics and may or may not have even broken even, regardless of a late charge in China. That all depends on how much of the foreign total is actually returned.
The plan was make big bucks with Terminator then follow it up with a movie called 478. After the success of Terminator, they’d shoot that movie, well, around about now. Or very soon. Here was the outline for ‘478’. In 478, Schwarzenegger plays a man whose wife and child die in a plane crash. The tragedy was caused by an air traffic controller’s screw-up. The air traffic controller is vilified for his mistake and placed into protective custody. Schwarzenegger cannot let it go, and is determined to seek vengeance.
By now we haven’t heard a thing about the movie, which was hinted at in the early summer. Is it delayed? Is it cancelled? If so, the next question must be, was this a result of Schwarzenegger’s failed gamble/summer offensive? Howls of laughter from the target audience you aim your sci-fi thriller at aren’t going to do that serious vigilante thriller they’re planning for you any good. Personally, I can’t say I care, if Schwarzenegger has destroyed his own prospects.
Perhaps a valuable lesson was learned. If he gets to make Conan 3, do not do what you did with Terminator 5.
