Waiting for a Terminator: Genisys sequel? You may be waiting a while. According to Deadline.com the film, at best, would have had to have passed $150 million in China.
While Terminator: Genisys did alright in China with $112.8M, sources have told Deadline that the film needed to clear $150M there before any quick movements were made on advancing with a sequel. HuaXia is handling distribution there. To date, worldwide, Genisys has made $440.16M and ranks as the second highest chapter in the franchise behind Terminator: Judgement Day ($519.8M).
The film apparently peaked at $112 million there. On paper, Terminator: Genisys has scored a big box office return. In practice, the film is actually a bomb. The current international take is at around $441 million, this comes from a budget that is said to be at around $200 million when all is considered such as marketing etc.
That may seem like a healthy return, but keep in mind that only 50 cent will be returned on the dollar for it in North America ($89 million total), 30 cent in most other countries and only 25 cent in China. In practice, for a movie that cost $200 million all in, the movie didn’t even break even.
That’s before you get to the movie being critically mauled and despised by virtually everyone. You can read ManlyMovie’s review of it here.
