First the second prequel to Alien, or first sequel to Prometheus, was sort of un-named. Then it was called Alien: Paradise Lost, which was then said to be temporary. It seemed like Ridley Scott couldn’t settle on a name. Now he’s found one. Scott attended the AFI Film Festival this week in Los Angeles and dropped the new title during a conversation:
“I was going to be doing what will be called ‘Alien: Covenant,’ which starts shooting next February, and we were struggling then with the screenplay there and then there was a phone call, somebody saying, ‘Listen, we’ve got this thing which is completely written called ‘[The] Martian,’ and I said, ‘Huh.’ And I sped read it in an hour and by mid-afternoon, I talked to Fox and said, ‘I need to talk to Drew [Goddard]…’
Let’s hope that this ill-advised notion of creating a new franchise has been banished and we’re now heading back into the already established territory. Most people want an Alien prequel, not a Prometheus sequel. Hopefully that desire translates back to Fox and they don’t abandon Neill Blomkamp’s movie.
Now, what about that Shane Black Predator movie?!
