A while back The Rock said he was really pursuing a remake of Big Trouble in Little China, more than any other movie because he’s particularly fond of that one. The news was met with a negative backlash, prompting The Rock to assuage fans and say he’d bring in John Carpenter.
“I loved reading the reactions from the fans, that they were so polarized – I’m the same way. My response is: know that I come to the project with nothing but love and respect for the original, which is why we want to bring on John Carpenter.”
But was this just a way of trying to temporarily quell uproar and did The Rock even bother to consult Carpenter? Here’s an exchange Carpenter has had with Screen Rant which could be revealing;
QUESTION: We’re hearing about a remake of “Big Trouble in Little China” with The Rock…
CARPENTER: [laughs] I know! It might be crazy… it might be great! I don’t know. Nobody’s told me anything. No one tells me anything [laughs]
QUESTION: That’s unfortunate to hear. The Rock had said, supposedly, that he was interested in having you involved in some way – but there’s been no outreach so far?
CARPENTER: No. No one’s talked to me about it. Haven’t heard a thing!
QUESTION: That’s very interesting.
CARPENTER: Yeah – isn’t it great?
Kurt Russell has also been dismissive of the project, saying he doesn’t do remakes. But keep in mind, Russell’s agent also said he ‘didn’t do’ ensembles, until Fast & Furious.
