Robert Redford is a person who has always shown up in manly movies from one genre movie to another, even if you’re not a fan, some of his earlier work (and indeed later work) has been kind of interesting. Now though, aged 80, it looks like he’s retiring.
In an interview with his grandson for the Walker Art Center this week (via The Guardian), he says;
“I’m getting tired of acting. I’m an impatient person, so it’s hard for me to sit around and do take after take after take. At this point in my life, age 80, it’d give me more satisfaction because I’m not dependent on anybody. It’s just me, just the way it used to be, and so going back to sketching – that’s sort of where my head is right now. So, I’m thinking of moving in that direction and not acting as much.”
So do we have a consensus on where Redford might fit in the pantheon of manly actors? Either way, one of his last movies will fit our niche, he’ll play an aged robber who can’t quite shake the thrill of the chase in The Old Man & the Gun.
