Underrated Manly Movies: Part VII
4) The Star (2002)
If you’re a war movie junkie like me, with a particular inclination towards WW2 stuff, then you’ve probably watch most if not all western movies in the genre. In that case you need to look further afield. Recently I found a good Russian effort from the year 2002.
The Star is about a special operations detachment of the Red Army that is sent into German held territory, on a stealth mission, in order to radio back details of the positions of German troops and armour. In some ways, it’s almost like a prequel in the Behind Enemy Lines series.
What I like about this movie is that it’s (mostly) stripped down from melodramatic bullshit and has strong pacing. It looks like they put some decent money into it as well, there’s a lot of genuine heavy armour moving around and the tensions of being alone with few fellow soldiers behind the enemy is usually conveyed effectively.
It’s a decent movie.
