R-rated movies have broken a 25 year record at the box office. For the past 9 weeks, an R-rated movie has been on top.
Annabelle: Creation, The Hitman’s Bodyguard (3x), IT (2x), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2x), Blade Runner: 2049.
This is the first time since 1992 that R-Rated movies have had a streak like this. Let’s look at the previous streaks;
2007: Resident Evil 3, The Brave One, 3:10 to Yuma, Halloween, Superbad (six weeks)
2001: Exit Wounds, The Mexican, Hannibal (six weeks)
2000: The Whole Nine Yards, Scream 3, Eye of the Beholder (six weeks)
1997: The Jackal, Starship Troopers, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Kiss the Girls, The Peacemaker (eight weeks)
It’ll be up to Blade Runner to sustain it for 10 weeks, since most of next week’s R releases look to be limited. Wheelman will get its release, but as a sign of the times this is a big budget streaming movie that is prepared for home consumption for Netflix.
Nonetheless, this is good news for R-rated movies.
