If you have been keeping an eye out for this one, you might be a little bit disappointed. Terminator 2: Judgement Day’s 4K UHD Blu-Ray has gotten its first review, which seems to confirm a rumor that it isn’t all that.
The issue is that grain reduction and digital smoothing has obviously been applied – presumably to enable a more effective 3D presentation – and that, while the 3,840 x 2,160 image appears pleasingly sharp, it’s almost superficially so. There are strong edges, but other areas of the picture appear almost CG like in their lack of really fine detail. It’s particularly evident in the scene were Schwarzenegger enters the biker bar in Chapter 1, stark naked. His skin appears ultra-smooth, his hair and eyebrows waxy, and the image feels flat.
It is, apparently, because the studio just used the remaster they had prepared for their new 3D release. This sounds like another one of those times where something you’ve been anticipating falls short, like the second release of Predator on Blu-Ray that looked like the cast were wax figures, such was the DNR overkill. The 3D version of Predator also sucks.
Also, come to think on it… where the fuck are Abyss and True Lies?! Will they finally be released on 8K streaming?
Keep an eye out for ManlyMovie’s review of T2 4K soon.
