Ridley Scott has been talking with the Toronto Sun this week during press rounds for All the Money in the World. And he’s been talking about taking Alien in a different direction, again, he says:
“There’s no reason why ‘Alien’ should now not be on the same level for fans as ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Wars.’ So I think the next step as to where we go is, do we sustain the ‘Alien’ [series] with the evolution of the beast or do we reinvent something else? I think you need to have an evolution on this famous beast because he’s the best monster ever, really.”
So there you have it, Scott is now being more honest about his desire to turn the franchise into some low ball sci fi series.
He also spoke about the future of the franchise, especially in the wake of Disney owning Fox, saying the brand is too good to leave on the table and he’d love to continue:
“I would like to; they’re crazy if they don’t. David is a fantastic villain. I love what [Michael Fassbender] did in ‘Covenant.’ But it’s f—ing hard, dude. We lifted ‘Alien’ out of a ditch and made ‘Prometheus’.”
But not so fast. A new report has come out of AVPGalaxy that the sequel to Alien: Covenant has been canned. Apparently pre-production was halted and physical assets prepared for the movie were auctioned off, because the movie is basically no longer an aspiration.
Conveniently, Neill Blomkamp has started doing what he did just before the announcement of Alien3 V2.0, where Michael Biehn had allegedly ‘signed on’ to appear, in posting new teaser artwork.
There’s been a notable backlash from hardcore fans and casuals alike in Ridley Scott’s insistence to de-Alien the franchise, perhaps Fox has noticed this and realized that drop ships, xenos and motion trackers = $$$? Is Blompkamp’s movie back on?
