TOP FIVE: SOPRANOS MURDERS

2) ‘MEMBERS ONLY’ MURDERS TONY SOPRANO

The most infamous death of the series, but not the most satisfying. Some still don’t even concede that it is a death.  Earlier in the episode, Paulie Walnuts warns Soprano that they may have been lured out of hiding with false promises.

Which was the only narrative trajectory that makes sense.

Throughout the series, the ‘glorified crew’ ran by Soprano behaved like maniacs and became a liability to the larger families.  With Soprano now also all but certain to be indicted, his time was up.  Another liability was Phil Leotardo, an overly emotional wild card.

Both problems were eliminated by New York at the same time, with the remainder of New Jersey absorbed.  Why not make this obvious?  My bet is Chase’s hand was forced by HBO, but I never bought into the pseudo-intellectual ‘open to interpretation’ ending.

Chase and HBO sat down and agreed on who killed him and why, you can be sure of that.
