You’d think that the heat on McG would have eased, since a Terminator film worse than his was actually put to screen. But then came the news that McG was set to reboot Lethal Weapon, as a TV pilot. Just to make sure that you were as pissed as could possibly be, they cast serial cretin Damon Wayons as Roger Murtaugh. The searing collective hate for this project could yet burn like that of a thousand suns.
And already, McG is getting nervous. IGN has the following;
“It’s extremely tough doing this,” elaborates McG. “I’m thinking all the time about what is it Mel delivered and what is it Danny delivered. Richard Donner is someone I look up to tremendously. What did they do to create that magic and how can I adjust that and capture the essence of what it is, but make it new and work for today? I think [Phil] Lord and[Christopher] Miller do it so well. You see what they did with Jump Street, which was no gimme. I wouldn’t have believed that Fargo could ever live up to the film and it certainly did. I hope I get Lethal Weapon right or I’m going to feel sick about it for a very long time.”
Man, that’s not exactly the most confident P.R. talk I’ve ever heard. It’s almost like McG expects that it’s going to suck. I will say one thing though, at least the man will harbour some guilt. Now Paul W.S. Anderson, there’s a man who rapes franchises then says ‘so what’? Just to go off topic with this, I remember when AICN confronted Anderson about destroying three franchises (Alien, Predator and Resident Evil) and he basically retorted that fan displeasure meant nothing in the face of big box office.
