A new prison break out movie will hit cinemas this September (for a limited run, I’m guessing) covering the 1983 escape of 38 IRA prisoners from the UK’s highest security prison.
Maze is a Swedish-Irish production, that is preparing to shoot in the coming weeks in Cork, Ireland.
In 1983 during the middle of a 30 year conflict, 38 members of the IRA coordinated an escape from HM Prison Maze in Antrim, at the time considered one of the highest security facilities in Europe. The bust out was the largest in Europe since WW2 and the largest in the history of the United Kingdom.
The movie is being funded by the Irish Film Board (IFB), Film Vast and RTÉ , with Cork County Council and Cork County Council Arts Offices providing regional support.
The movie is expected to shoot for four weeks in a large decommissioned prison in Cork. The movie has been described as ‘an exciting prison break story’ by James Hickey of the IFB.
Synopsis: Inspired by the true events of the infamous 1983 prison breakout of 38 IRA prisoners from HMP, which was to become the biggest prison escape in Europe since World War II.
Stephen Burke directs.
