As a gearhead who enjoyed the first few movies of this series (well, maybe not the second), I didn’t expect it to last when it was announced that Diesel wouldn’t return for the second. Then after seeing the second itself, which was really really shit, that seemed like all she wrote. Walker has spoken on that recently with Collider.
The thing that’s pretty crazy is that neither Vin nor I were going back to do the third one. They were going to do a direct-to-video 4. They were going to dispose it and be done with it. But then, Vin was like, “No, I’ll come in for a cameo,” because it wasn’t testing well. He wanted to set up the fourth one and the studio went for it, and we got a second life. It was supposed to be done already.
I don’t think the rejuvenation was all down to Diesel. The third movie is fine in it’s own right (not great) thanks to Lin basically making it a competently directed car porn (for the most part) movie. It was really the fourth that gave the series a new life. The the trailer that finally showed Diesel and Walker together again easily sold that movie. In the rest of the interview, Walker talks James Wan’s entrance to the series and says that at least another three movies are probably going to happen. Hopefully Wan puts a bit of his brutal ‘Death Sentence’ actionism into ’em.
