The Verge.com, a very large and prominent website that accrues monster traffic weekly, has admitted to stealing The Expendables 3 via online piracy. “I torrented ‘The Expendables 3′” is the name of the article. The author then goes on to say that what he did was fine – because The Expendables 3 is a good movie, so he’ll see it anyway.
I was struck by how outrageous this piece of ‘journalism’ is for several reasons. First, he admits that he pirated a movie. Openly. When the same thing happened for the first movie, the studio opened 21,000 lawsuits against people who allegedly downloaded it. Yet here a man writing for such a prominent website casually admits to such an action as if it were a forum post. Hell, this kind of thing shouldn’t even be posted as a Facebook post.
Secondly, he attempts to argue that what he did was fine, because the movie turned out to be good in his opinion. Well what if it wasn’t? What if it was a slapstick, CGI-filled farce? What then, still going to go see it? If I walk into a grocery store and crack open the latest variant of ‘Monster Energy Drink’ and start consuming it without paying for it, to see what it’s like, do I walk up to the cashier and say – “It’s okay, it tastes good, I think I’ll buy it now”? Is this a fucking joke?
Let me tell you something now. Nobody who writes for TheVerge.com would dare create an article entitled “I torrented **insert movie title here**”, without first having gained permission from somebody somewhere. The whole thing reeks of P.R. damage control and it appears that TheVerge.com accepted the contract to carry out the spin. I mean, just read how desperate the whole thing is. The man is selling the movie very, very hard. Too hard. Here’s a tip, next time try subtlety. How stupid do you think we are, anyway? It must show how little regard they have for those dumb action fanatics.
TheVerge.com has openly admitted to stealing The Expendables 3. Yet for some reason I don’t think they expect to get into trouble for doing so. Hmm…
