Top Five: WW2 Movies

3) Band of Brothers (2001)

Okay, so it’s not a movie, but it’s close enough.  C’mon, you can’t seriously have a list like this and omit this one. Band of Brothers is superior to Saving Private Ryan.  Several reasons for that.  Firstly, it’s based on a real unit (Easy Company), not only that but it is a better adaption of their story than Ambrose’s book (the guy is a bit of a blowhard, the book reads like an action novel, like it’s almost an embellishment).  Secondly there’s a gravitas in seriousness in Band of Brothers that’s somewhat absent in Saving Private Ryan.  Winters’ is also much, much manlier than Hank’s character in Saving Private Ryan.  Band of Brothers is like a more refined Saving Private Ryan.  If only the war in the East could get a similar TV show.  The Pacific (2010) was not a worthy successor.
