Top Five: WW2 Movies

2) Kelly’s Heroes (1970)

Kelly’s Heroes was a decidedly Manly Movie for most of it’s duration.  Clint Eastwood?  Telly Savalas?  Donald Sutherland?  These are names embedded in Manly Movie lore, to have them together as an ensemble was something special, especially in a WW2 heist movie.  But it wasn’t until the finale propelled it firmly into classic territory, our first real glimpse of the ‘Tiger’ running riot in a movie (although it was a replica, see our article on Tiger replica’s in movies here).  That action sequence is still, to this day, something else.  You know what’s happening and why, a cool handed director is confident and knows what real action presentation is all about. Three Tigers vs one Sherman, what a pitch!  Then it has the balls to try humour right in the middle of it (eating some cheese, drinking some wine, catching some rays) and succeeds in that too.  “Hey, man.  Nobody said nothing about locking horns with no Tigers…”
