Arnold hasn’t looked his best in his recent movies. I have to say it. In The Last Stand, which was a decent movie in my opinion (review), he did look kinda, well, “old”, as his character lamented. His ‘Hawaiian Grandpa’ schtick in The Expendables series hasn’t been doing him justice either.
But it’s seeing him in pictures like the above that gives you pause and makes you wonder if Arnold, while no spring chicken and undeniably an old man, might just also be having a problem of not being utilized as well as he could be. Tell me he doesn’t look like Major Schaefer on vacation in the above candid shots.
So much, in fact, that for a moment maybe we should dare to dream of Arnold going one last round against that “fucking lizard”. Could he do it? Take on the rigors of another Predator movie? We know that Shane Black is working on a new Predator movie. And he’s keen to insist that it’s a sequel and no reboot. That leaves (slightly) open…
If this was to be done, it would need to be done properly.
They’d have to acknowledge his age handle the character carefully. They’d have to carefully build a cast as well, one that could help sell the idea of a man of Arnold’s age going against such a deadly opponent. 30 years ago in his prime a Predator kicked Arnold’s ass, damn near killed him. Today, it would be over very quickly. They need to take that into consideration. Hell, maybe they should be bold and even kill Major Dutch.
The problem is I don’t see how any of this could happen. Arnold’s stock as an action star has dwindled, as it happens with age. He has had flops recently and poor moves, so maybe Shane Black thinks the last person to take on the “fucking alien” is a seasoned Arnold Schwarzenegger, both as a financial and creative decision.
I think we’ll have a more clear idea after Terminator: Genisys. If it performs well financially and Arnold performs well as an action star, maybe.
Maybe…
