This week Beverly Hills Cop celebrates the big 3-0, along with yours truly by the way. It entered cinemas in the first and second week of December 1984. Now how about this for some stats: $15 million budget – $317 million gross. The second movie did around $300 million too. It’s kinda surprising that they haven’t made another, at least for reasons of greed.
Eddie Murphy as it happens really was up there as far as 80’s/90’s action stars go. 48 hrs, Beverly Hills Cop, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Another 48 Hrs, Metro. I’m surprised Sylvester Stallone didn’t recruit him into his Expendables franchise, especially with Murphy’s comedic abilities and Stallone’s insistence that The Expendables veer into comedy territory. You know what, maybe he was asked – and said no. All the same, Murphy has Cop IV on the horizon, with Jerry Bruckheimer and Brett Ratner boasting of it being R-rated before the script is even finished. Will BHC go the way of Rambo IV, or Die Hard 4?
Anyway, raise a glass to Beverly Hills Cop. Shit, watch it this week.
