Top Five: Jean Claude Van Damme Movies

2) Universal Soldier (1992)

I think about 23 years ago, this might have been the first Van Damme movie I seen, on VHS. As a kid, I knew instantly like I did with my first Schwarzenegger or Stallone movies that Van Damme was already a favourite. Thank God I was raised on these guys and not some girlie man shit like anime. This is the first movie for Van Damme that was really mainstream, at least it looks that way. The fight scene with Lundgren is one of my all time favourites, although they should’ve shown Lundgren’s amazing martial arts agility too.

This movie has had five sequels in some form or another. That’s what happens when Emmerich directs a movie with Lundgren and Van Damme on a bloody rampage/feud. Van Damme went on to do better, though I firmly believe this is Lundgren’s best movie. And you know what? The story is even kinda cool. Had a different cast and director took on the concept, under a different genre, it probably would’ve gotten rave reviews.
