1) Hard Target: Director’s Cut (1993)
Here’s Jean Claude Van Damme’s best movie, which is also John Woo’s best (western, at least) movie, the best action movie of the 90’s (this version, remember) and the best cut of Hard Target. It’s still, as of 2015, an unreleased, longer version. Like I said in an earlier full review of the movie, it’s a definite career best for Van Damme. Van Damme works best as the sullen outsider and this movie has the sense to play on that. Perhaps nobody will bring out Van Damme’s physical presence/ability like John Woo.
It’s the movie John Woo wanted, but the studio butchered it and the theatrical movie is what we got – the fact that the butchered version is still a classic should suggest just how good this movie is. It’s almost 2 hours of violent, cool, suave and satisfying action. Woo, the action surgeon, doesn’t really give a shit about anything else and is just indulging here. And it has Lance Henriksen as the villain, maybe even outdoing his turn as Bishop. For fuck sake, someone release this on DVD or Blu Ray.
