Top Five: Gulf War Movies

3) Jarhead (2005)

I will give Jarhead one thing.  It’s damned sure the best looking Gulf War movie ever.  I remember checking this out in high definition, back when 1080p was the new standard, and the oil fire scenes were breathtaking.

Anyway, this is Full Metal Jacket’s trashy, inferior cousin.  But still a fairly watchable movie if you ask me, even if I found Jake Gyllenhaal to be a severe prick (not even talking about the character).  Some critisize the movie for its lack of action.  True, that’s a legit complaint.  But it’s still good for a watch every five or so years.

By the way, a word on books.  This, like Bravo Two Zero, was based on a book.  Although this one was real, you might want to check it out.  But if you’re looking for a Gulf War book that covers real balls out hellish action, I highly recommend Storm on the Horizon: Khafji–The Battle that Changed the Course of the Gulf War, by David Morris.  It’s about US Marines (who else?) in the thick of it, against a crack armored division.
