Top Five: Gulf War Movies

1) Three Kings (1999)

If Jarhead is an inferior Full Metal Jacket, then Three Kings is an inferior Kelly’s Heroes.  We may not like the director, David O. Russell, a guy who routinely bullies his cast and crew.  But there’s two things to cancel that out.  One, George Clooney did something manly for once in his life and knocked the asshole out, for abusing a stuntman – “my job was then to humiliate the people who were doing the humiliating”… right on!

And second… it’s a pretty good movie.  Yeah, I mean it’s not exactly in the war, but hell, Clooney and Co. break the ceasefire.

It’s funny.  It looks a million dollars and I’ll give all involve their due for making this one work as well as it did.  I remember seeing this one release day with friends, the war was still kind of (fresher) in our minds back then.  It also had possibly the first ‘bullet time’ effects we’ve seen in movies.

My favourite part?  When the dog seizes the moment and binges on fresh milk, of course.  Get in there, boy.
